Body Image Reimagined: A Fresh Approach for Health Professionals

A one-day workshop for clinicians wanting to move beyond simply changing body image thoughts and explore what lies beneath body image.

Many of us have learned a range of useful cognitive and behavioural strategies for working with body image. These can be incredibly helpful, but sometimes we can help someone change what they think about their body without reaching the deeper emotional shift we’re hoping for.

Rather than only asking, “How do we help this person think differently about their body?”, what if we also asked:

“What has their body come to represent?”

In this workshop, you will explore how to:

  • Understand what body dissatisfaction is communicating
  • Work with the emotional learnings and parts beneath body image
  • Integrate these ideas into everyday clinical practice for deeper, more lasting change

You won’t be learning an entirely new treatment model. Instead, you will learn ways to bring these ideas into the approaches and skills you already use.

Workshop Content and Outline

Part 1: Reimagining what body image is
  • Develop a new understanding and conceptualisation of body image
  • Explore how body image can function as a way of managing underlying experiences and needs
  • Consider why changing body image thoughts alone may not create lasting change
  • Rethink body image goals in treatment
Part 2: Working with the parts connected to body image
  • Develop an understanding of parts work and how it can be applied to body image interventions
  • Explore the different parts that can become activated around body image and learn ways to engage parts that may be reluctant to change
  • Learn how to have dialogues with different parts, including chair work
  • Apply parts work to existing body image strategies to enhance benefits
Part 3: Healing what lies beneath body image
  • Identify experiences and emotional learnings that have shaped body image and shame
  • Explore how these experiences continue to influence body image in the present
  • Use experiential strategies to revisit these experiences, update emotional learnings and meet underlying emotional needs
  • Briefly introduce somatic strategies to support body image work
Part 4: Putting it all together in practice
  • Bring the different elements of the approach together in clinical practice
  • Work through practical case examples
  • Consider how to integrate these ideas with approaches you already use

After the workshop

The learning does not stop when the workshop ends.

You will also have access to two live one-hour group follow-up sessions, where we can:

  • Troubleshoot how you’re applying the ideas in practice
  • Explore stuck points and questions
  • Build confidence integrating the approach into your existing work

About Natasha

I am a clinical psychologist dedicated to supporting people with eating disorders and body image issues. I am also an Advanced Schema Therapist and Supervisor, Certified EMDR clinician and credential eating disorder clinician.

In the over 20 years I have worked in the eating disorders space; I have supervised many health professionals who tell me how stuck they feel with the traditional treatment interventions for eating disorders. In the past, I too have felt this stagnation in my work and lacked the confidence to try new approaches.

I now regularly use a variety of trauma informed and emotion focused approaches in my work with clients and have seen transformative changes. The approaches have helped to make my work more fulfilling, creative and authentic.

As a supervisor and trainer, I feel privileged to support health professionals to find creative and innovative ways to work with complexity that are intuitive, fun and tailored to a person’s needs. My trainings are energizing and supportive. Consider them a launching pad to build your confidence weaving trauma informed ideas into your established practice.
